Compare/ Contrast Paper Instruction

Please make sure to include an introduction that identifies and describes the programs/methods that you will be comparing and contrasting.

Every loving parent wishes only the best to his/her child, because children are young reproductions of them, but unfortunately, not every child realizes this. Some kids can be very stubborn, offensive and mean, but, nevertheless, parents must not turn away from them in any circumstances. Truly good parents must constantly support and teach their kids, even if they are rebellious and do not submit to parents’ authority. Children become especially uncontrollable during the age of adolescence, when their personalities are being formed. This age is really important for young people, because during it they meet their first love, become disillusioned, more rational and mature.

Nowadays, more and more parents have some serious problems in communication with their children. Initially, they try to cope with the problems of their children by their own and such attempts may differ from each other. For instance, at first, parents may try to understand the essence of the problem, discuss it with the child, and then they try to solve it together. But in most cases, it is not as easy as it sounds, so thoughtful parents have to contact special juvenile correctional institutions for troubled children. Such facilities could vary from boarding and private schools and up to military camps and summer programs for troubled children. However, despite all the differences, these institutions have a lot in common (Nicolet, 2011).

In my essay, I want to compare military style boot camps and boarding schools for young delinquents, as the two types of juvenile correctional programs. I would like to start with military camps and say a few words about them. Correctional boot camps are special facilities created to discipline teenagers, establish their relationships with parents and develop those personal qualities which can be useful in real life. They can belong either to the prison or to the penal system of the United States and be governmental or non-governmental. These training boot camps are based on military style programs and they all have rigorous physical exercises, strict schedule and a quite brutal sergeant, who keeps order in his barrack.

Such camps emphasize on the discipline and appropriate behavior, good manners; these kinds of camps are designed for physical and intellectual trainings, but the main aim of such military style institutions is to make children and their parents happy. These boot camps can be designed for a short or a long term, but a long term staying is more effective than a short one. The long term stay allows one to fully experience the atmosphere of discipline and the control of the authorities (Rudlin, 2012).

Boarding schools are educational institutions, where children live with their classmates and teachers. Also, sometimes such correctional facilities are called “residential”, because they provide what to eat and where to sleep, so the problems regarding accommodation are actually solved.

Nevertheless, unlike boot camps, not all boarding schools take to teach defiant youth. Some schools are designed for the audacious youth, so if your child is just a little controllable and may simply listen to others, you should choose school with more soft and calm conditions, because good surrounding always favorably influences the troubled students. Such schools are isolated educational institutions, just like the military style boot camps, with a bunch of rules and restrictions, but without any relatives and family environment.

Both military style boot camps for troubled juvenile offenders and boarding schools have many similarities and differences, because they have different types of programs for troubled children. To clarify, I want to compare some major statements between these correctional programs:

  • Poor family values due to separate living.

Common to camps and schools is the children isolation in these institutions. During such isolations teens for a long time live far away from their relatives, and are only among their peers and teachers. Adolescence is a particularly important time of life, during this age the concept of family values is being formed, and that is why a long separation with relatives does not carry a lot of value, but on the contrary, it weakens family ties. Although, some parents believe that life away from their kids could be useful and it may help their children to realize the real importance of family bonds in their lives. However, parents should not overdo with these separations, because the effect might be sorrowful (McMullen, 2012).

  • Living conditions.

Good living conditions are certainly important for adolescents while their personalities are being formed. Children must be healthy and in a good mood, so reasonably they must sleep and eat well. In military style boot camps living conditions certainly differ from schools: sleep, meals and showers in camps take place according to the exact schedule, while at school students feel themselves more free and unbound. I believe that the atmosphere of total discipline in camps is designed for absolutely uncontrollable children, who need strict upbringing, while boarding schools conditions are designed to make children independent, confident, and also provide them with an excellent education. Moreover, these correctional institutions for troubled kids provide different educational levels, whereas military camps graduates are likely to continue their life path with a military career, and those who will finish boarding schools, will probably achieve different civilian professions, like lawyers, teachers, etc. (Ashcroft, 2012).

  • Punishment measures.

The system of punishments and rewards is being of particular importance in educational process. Moreover, these educational systems should encourage troubled teens to work more diligently and fully to comply with their tasks, and as a reward - get appropriate encouragements. Nevertheless, the penalties should not be too harsh, because they must just motivate kids, but not harm. For instance, military boot camps penalties are based on physical punishments, like push-ups, sit-ups and marching for hours. Of course, such rough measures are aimed to make individuals strong, capable and teach them all necessary qualities, but still they must not be overly rigorous or stringent.
Other punishments provide boarding schools, where teens loose some privileges in case of misbehavior or poor grades. For example, they could be denied in the right to leave institution on a weekend or holiday. To make long story short, punishment system in military boot camps is much more distinct, whereas is boarding schools it is more liberal.

  • Program effectiveness.

The decision to send troubled adolescents into isolated institutions is usually made when situation is critical and parents cannot control their children. As the last step to save their children, parents send their children away from their homes; keep paying a lot of money, so it is logical that they expect a certain result. Such correctional programs for juvenile offenders must be effective, otherwise there is no point in them (Johnston, 2011).

If we compare the effectiveness of military boot camps and boarding schools, the results may vary due to different discipline levels of the students. For example, in military camps students live under strict adherence to the rules, while in boarding school such conditions are rather liberal, but in the same time students in schools are more loyal, controllable and hard-working.

To conclude, I would like to notice, that family values are of paramount importance in our lives, so we should undoubtedly appreciate them. The bonds between parents and children are sacred, always were and will be, but unfortunately, some children become uncontrollable and disrespectful, so in order to help them, parents have to resort to such drastic measures, as sending their children to the correctional institutions. Correctional programs for juvenile offenders may vary, for example, it could be summer schools, military camps or medical institutions. All such efforts are considered to help troubled children, improve the family relations with their parents and improve their behavior. Children have to appreciate and love their parents, even the Holy Bible says that, for example in the Proverbs 29:17 “Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart”.

Military boot camps, residential schools and other correctional institutions are created to help the troubled children, to discipline them and develop their relationships with parents and relatives. All these institutions have similar aims; they teach troubled children the right values and prepare them for adult life.
