After reading an article, you might be asked to write an article critique. What is it and how to write a critique of an article – would be your natural response to such a task? Don’t worry, we know how to help you.
Let us first define what an article critique is. An article critique is your objective evaluation of a certain paper, in which you provide an in-depth analysis of the relevance of the author’s main points to the supporting arguments. Writing a critique essay, you should consider that you don’t need to simply summarize key points of an article but rather demonstrate your impression of it with supporting evidence.
To make the process of writing a critique easier and more enjoyable, we’ve developed a three-step strategy, which you’ll learn how to critique an article effortlessly.

1. Active reading

  • Read the article twice or even three times. The first time, read for defining the key ideas and note to pay the special attention to the thesis.
  • Then make up a list of questions which you would answer after reading the article for the second time. This list may include such questions as:

What is the purpose of the article, its main argument, audience, and ways of reaching it, etc.

  • During your third reading, you can extend your notes adding some important thoughts, ideas, and observations.
  • Define the primary concept of your article critique. It may be just a rough draft in a form of a question, which you will answer after reading the article several times. Keep a record of all your observations.
  • Prepare your reference list to back up your article critique with relevant evidence.

2. Gather evidence
Gather evidence for writing your article critique by:

  • Putting the logic of the author’s thesis under question.
  • Testing the hypothesis comparing it with some other similar examples.
  • Analyzing the sources the author used in the paper.
  •  Examining the introductory and concluding parts to prove that they match each other.
  • Searching for intentional or unintentional biases, which may consist of the opposite evidence ignorance, unreliable data, inappropriate evidence, etc. Consider also any traces of race, gender, class, or ethnicity biases.
  • Considering writer’s interpretation of the papers: complete/incomplete, well-structured, coherent, with relevant data and supporting evidence, or not.
  • Paying a special attention to the article’s structure and literary techniques, tone, and definitions of the terms. All these details will help you to define the quality of the paper and, thus, build up a good article critique.
  • Digging deeper, you may find out more of other scholars’ achievements in the field, some valuable opinions on the subject, etc.
  • Keeping in mind that an article critique is not about providing any positive or negative evaluation of the paper.

After gathering and checking all references, details, and defining reliability of an author’s article, you should also check the format of their critique.

3. Format your critique
In order to format properly your critique, start with the introduction of your own outline. Your introduction should consist of two or more paragraphs, and express some basic principles of an author’s work.

  • Be open and direct in any statement you write. Make sure your purpose is clear and coherent. If you don’t feel your personal commitment to the paper, you should work on, just find a new topic. Never let your readers get down because of their little commitment.
  • Evidence for the argument has to be written in the body paragraphs of the article critique. A new idea or the continuation of the previous idea should be expressed in each body paragraph.
  • Use topic sentences while writing body paragraphs. They will help to summarize the key points of paragraphs to come, etc.
  • Make your article critique more solid, catching, and informative.
  • Make the tone of your arguments more objective, confident, reasonable, and appealing to the audience. May your words not be exaggerated but rather easy to understand and accept them.
  • In the conclusion of your article critique you should not just summarize the key arguments but also suggest some possible implications. You also have to assure your readers that the paper’s quality and writer’s competence go along with each other. Include some information about how the article critique can be applied to modern life with its “eats” and “treats.”
